Meet our Team
Kenneth G. MacDonald, Jr. M.D., FACS
Dr. Kenneth G. MacDonald, Jr. is a highly respected, board-certified General Surgeon who specializes in weightloss surgical options. A native of Charleston, West Virginia, MacDonald received his doctor of medicine from the West Virginia School of Medicine and his Bachelor of Science degree from Washington and Lee University. He completed residencies at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, the ECU medical school, and North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Bowman-Gray School of Medicine (now Wake Forest University School of Medicine).
Prior to joining Physicians East Bariatric Surgery Center, he spent more than 19 years at East CarolinaUniversity’s medical school, where he was professor of surgery and chief of gastrointestinal surgery and surgical endoscopy. MacDonald was also the director of the ECU Department of Surgery’s obesity research program and primary investigator for ECU on four national multi-institutional studies.
In addition to working on many national research projects, professional lectures and presentations, and published works, he was one of seven primary investigators in the U.S. in the original Food and Drug Administration trial for the “Lap-Band Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAGB) System,” a minimally-invasive obesity surgery system option, and he was chosen to present the conglomerate United States results to the FDA in 2000, in Washington, D.C.
In 2006, and every year since, MacDonald was chosen as one of the “Best Doctors” in America by a survey of more than 30,000 physicians. MacDonald also has been selected to “Who’s Who in Medicine and Health Care” and “Who’s Who in America.”
Dr. MacDonald lives in Greenville, NC. He and his wife, Jane, have three daughters.
Timothy W. McGuire, MD, PhD, FACS
Dr. Timothy W. McGuire is a highly respected board-certified bariatric and general surgeon who has been in practice since 2003. After obtaining his Bachelor of Science degree from Oakland University in 1984 and his PhD in synthetic organic chemistry in 1993, Dr. McGuire went on to earn his medical degree from Wayne State University in 1998. He completed his residency training in 2003 at the Detroit Medical Center before deciding to relocate his family to Washington NC to begin private practice in general surgery. With a desire to expand his surgical armamentarium, he returned to Wayne State University in 2008 and completed an advanced laparoscopic fellowship directed at gastrointestinal procedures including bariatric (weight loss) surgery. Dr. McGuire is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons.
